We will be celebrating the 350th anniversary of her birth with performances of her Scriptural Cantatas, suites, sonatas, and excerpts from her opera Céphale et Procris. One of the most important French Baroque composers, at age 13 Mademoiselle de la Guerre was called “the marvel of her century” by a contributor to the literary magazine Mercure gallant. She became one of the most famous musicians of her time. The year she died, a special medallion was created with her portrait on the front. On the back was the inscription: “Aux grands musiciens, j'ai disputé le Prix” (“I contended with the greatest of musicians”). Her distinctively French music was unique for her time because she incorporated Italian musical styles, resulting in pieces rich in harmony and exquisitely pleasant melodies.
